Systems Thinker | Meaning Maker | Regenerative Leader

Rebecca Abernathy

Finding the trail through complexity — and knowing when to let the path find you.

On a path to purposeful leadership

I'm a systems builder and organizational strategist based in Baltimore, with 20+ years of experience working at the intersection of product operations, internal communications, and the people-side of organizational change — primarily in health technology.

My work is shaped by a simple observation: healthy systems have a rhythm. They account for energy, recovery, and feedback — not just throughput. Whether I'm designing a workflow automation, facilitating a leadership summit, or building an operating cadence for a scrappy healthtech startup, my approach is the same: read the terrain, check your supplies, know where you're headed and why — then move.

I'm a Maryland Master Naturalist in training — fueled by morning coffee and kindness — and a lifelong student of how living systems, both ecological and organizational, sustain themselves over time.

I'm currently seeking my next full-time role in the healthtech space or a mission-driven organization. If that's you, let's talk.

Mile Marker 01

Operating Model Design

Translating strategy into the structures, rhythms, and decision frameworks that let teams actually execute — without building systems so rigid they break the moment the map changes.

Mile Marker 02

Process & Workflow Optimization

I find the multi-step manual process and design the version that runs itself. Organizational diagnostics, bottleneck analysis, automation where it belongs — without losing the human judgment that matters.

Mile Marker 03

Internal Communications Strategy

Building the content, cadences, and channels that keep complex organizations coherent — especially during periods of growth, transition, or strategic realignment.

Mile Marker 04

Advisory & Fractional Ops Leadership

For early-stage teams that need senior operational thinking without a full-time hire. I embed, get oriented fast, and build what's needed to make the organization function at its potential.

Field notes and discoveries

Entry 01:
Process Design

Turning a broken intake queue into a self-running triage system

Product change requests were arriving faster than any human could sort them. I designed a Jira automation workflow that triaged, categorized, and routed incoming requests without requiring a person in the loop — from identification to assignment.

OUTCOME: 90% reduction in intake response time.

Entry 02:
Operating Rhythm

Recovering 12 hours of meeting time — and redirecting it toward strategy

Quarterly roadmap planning had become a time sink that consumed the team's capacity without improving their clarity. I redesigned the planning cadence from quarterly sprints to a continuous cycle, restructuring the artifacts and forums that supported it.

OUTCOME: 12 hours per quarter reclaimed for strategic work.

Entry 03:
Resource Strategy

Why lay off good people when you can redeploy them?

At Rally Health, I designed an internal internship program that repurposed talent from support functions into product communications. Less waste, more capability, and a team that understood the product from the inside out.

OUTCOME: Closed a hiring gap and a layoff gap simultaneously.

Entry 04:
Internal Communications

How a communications product evolved into organizational infrastructure

Asked to create “some kind of report or something” that would help enterprise leadership understand our organization's product work, I led my team in building what became a monthly publication that connected product progress to strategic goals, mapped every initiative to the company’s Balanced Scorecard, and ultimately became organizational infrastructure.

OUTCOME: Within a few months of launch, the report had become embedded infrastructure.
